The original Hamburgerbryggeriet that dated back to the late 18th century once extended over the entire block. They were pioneers within beer brewing in Sweden and were among the first to brew the popular pilsner beer. As we all know, this type of beer became a big success among us Swedes which led to a rapid expansion of the brewery.
When the old brewery building was no longer big enough, a magnificent new brewery was built with its grand brewery hall (bryggarsal) which was completed in 1914. From 1890 to 1964, the brewery belonged to AB Stockholms Bryggerier which was later bought up by Pripps who brewed beer in Brygghuset on Norrtullsgatan up until the early 1970s.
After that, Brygghuset has had a number of different tenants and activities, primarily within the cultural sector and, among other things, as a youth hostel. The building has also stood completely empty for long periods while awaiting an uncertain destiny.
